Hey all,
I was reading through some of your post and saw that Texels are prone to fungal infections, would Abyssinians be prone as well?
When I picked my little guy up from the pet shop, he had a bite mark just over his left ear. The lady in the shop said the other pigs had bullied him because he was timid. They had treated the bite with ointment and were now applying aloe vera to help with the itchy scab, which I continued when I brought him home until it had all cleared up.
Now I notice he has little white patches appearing on his ears, like someone dusted flour over them, and I was rather alarmed to find he had a rather big scab on his chest that wasn't there before! After watching him I saw that he's biting himself in that one particular spot.
I've had him almost two months and haven't noticed him scratching more than usual. He appears to have dry skin, which may be due to the fact he's shedding. I massaged coconut oil into his fur and skin a couple of weeks ago, left it to soak in and then washed him after a few hours, that helped the dry skin a lot. I do that to my own scalp when my psoriasis is bad
Other than that he seems happy and healthy, and has even begun popcorning!
If you guys have any advice for caring for pigs with sensitive skin, I'd love some advice! I'm going to bring him to the vet this week regardless, as I'm planning on getting another and I want my dude in tip top shape before I introduce a little brother or sister to him.
