Just noticed this on canelos back end this evening :/ I haven't had them long so I can't say I've noticed any changed behaviour but he is quite shy and likes to hide and curl up in corners a lot but I haven't noticed any change20170919_201855.jpg I want to try and avoid further investigation as I don't want to tottaly freak him out!

Looks possibly fungal infection, he'll need a vets visit for some cream/shampoo to sort that out

Whereabouts are you located?

Aw no :( I do have some guinea safe shampoo that I bought but he's still really shy just over a week in my flat :/ he's Gona freak out if I try scrub it out. Do I definitely need to get him to the vet? Or is it possible it could go away on its own if I keep a close eye? From petting him slightly that seems to be the only small spot (right on his back end) that's affected at the minute. What could have caused it? Ive been cleaning thier cage regularly and rocket looks perfectly healthy and is coming on quite well, getting used to me and his surroundings. But canelo is still quite shy and hides away.

Sadly fungal will not go away, it will only get worse and spread to your other piggy and to you and other humans!

You definitely have to go to the vets, it will need specialised treatment I'm afraid. Normal shampoo will likely just irritate it or promote spread.

Both your piggies will likely need treatment as it's highly contagious. Hope it gets better soon!

Aww bugger :( thanks guys I'll try get this sorted asap I'll phone a vet tomorrow and see what to do

A pet shop in the next town but I think it only came up today. I recently got them a new wooden cabin house and I was reading that it can carry spores or something like that. So it might have caused it? I don't really know :/ just gutted that I might have to scare the snouser off the poor guy to get him sorted. He's only just starting to get used to things too :(

It's likely he came with it, I would get in contact with them and tell them the situation. Was it a Pets At Home?

I took on a boy who had health issues, getting it sorted actually brought us closer together as it did when one of my girls had a problem when she was young. So I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure he'll be fine :)

No just "the pet shop" there were no guinea pigs closer to where I live so one of the local pet stores recommended to go there.

I don't think it's too bad so far and hopefully a little skin treatment and/or shampoo should be clear it up. I'll get talking to a vet in the morning and see what they advise :)

A patch that size has not come up overnight - if you have only had him for a week then he definitely came with it.
The good news is that one of my guinea pigs also had fungal in the same area, and it cleared up quickly with ointment from the vet that I had to rub in twice a day.

Hi!

Ringworm takes 10-14 days between infection and the acute outbreak; your patch must have taken several days to develop. Any decent pet shop will reimburse your vet cost for illnesses that must have been contracted at the shop if they happen in the first 2-3 weeks after the sale if present the vet bill together with the sales receipt.

Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Do not use some cheap broad spectrum shop stuff that is too weak to heal, only prolongs the suffering and will cost you more as by the time you see finally see a vet over it, it will be a lot worse.

If the diagnosis comes back as ringworm, please follow the tips in this guide. Ringworm is the most aggressive and most transmittable form of a fungal infection; it also transmits to humans and other mammalian pets. Good hygiene and a disinfectant that not only kills bacteria (like the normal ones), but that also kills fungal and especially fungal spores is absolutely essential to get on top of it all. Please don't underestimate ringworm!

Sadly ringworm is one of the things that pet shops and breeders really struggle with. Stressed out baby piggies whose immune systems are still under construction in close proximity are unfortunately prime material for any of the usual opportunistic issues like ringworm, mange mites or respiratory infection. :(
Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

Hey guys just to let you know went to the vets earlier this evening and they say it's looking like fungal infection however she said you can never really rule out the mites but she tested for ring worm and it's negative :) so she treated for mites and gave me a solution to bathe them in tonorow night and Monday and it's not to bad at the minute so that should clear it up.

Piggies were a bit stressed out with the whole car ride and the vets but seem to be ok and happy back in their cage. Not doing to much hiding so I'm pretty happy to get them sorted.

As for the cause she said it's very hard to determine the exact cause or how they get it as spores can be in a lot of different things. She even showed me how to trim their nails as I wasn't confident I could do it without causing them stress or hurting them

Gave them some veggies when they came in and they seem to be grand.

We shall see how this bath goes tomorrow! Hope I don't freak them out :/ but I'm sure it will be alright. Just a check up again next week!

I am glad you got to the vet, but I do have to ask how piggy savvy your vet is.
It is possible to check for ringworm in situ, but realistically on the spot diagnosis is notoriously unreliable, and would almost always be followed up with a lab culture which can take anywhere from 2 days to a week.
It is good you have treatment, but do be prepared to go back for fungal treatments if the mite treatment doesn't solve the problem.

She said that herself. That I can't give you a definite no. That's why she gave me treatments but wants to see them again next week :)
