We recently got a new mother and baby guinea pig from an SSPCA shelter, to keep our original (neutered, so he shouldn't smell of males) pig company, after his companion died. We were originally planning on getting just the mother, but we learned that she had been bonded with her daughter when we went to pick her up. She had been rescued from an assumed guinea pig farm, so had already had multiple litters by the age of 1 or 2, and is now very protective of her baby.
When we introduced the pair to our male guinea pig, the baby and he immediately got on very well, but the mother froze and barely ate even though the other two were. This seemed normal enough at first, as guinea pigs freeze when they are nervous, but she has still barely moved even though her daughter is happily playing with the male. She then bit him twice when he moved suddenly, and she seems very scared of him.
We now don't know how to bond the male and the mother guinea pigs, because we don't know whether she is just being protective or her daughter or if she had had a bad experience with males at the place she was rescued from. Any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks! I'll definitely read the articles. We're about to move the girls into a cage right next to the boy's cage, so they can get used to each other without the risk of another bite. All of them are very quiet right now, is it just because of the change?
