I just took my guinea pig Roly to the vet who suspects she has a very large cyst and suggested surgery. As Roly is 5 years 8 months I’m wondering if this is too old to operate on and if I should just leave her be or try another method like hormone injections?

I’m hoping to book an appointment for her at a specialist if possible but wondered if anyone had any experience with this?

Or vets they would recommend in south east London?

Thanks,
Miranda

Hi

I have access to a good operating vet and have had a number of 5 years old sows emergency spayed who have all made a good recovery and lived to 6-8 years of life.
It is however a major operation whether your vet is opting for a full spay or an ovariectomy from the back.

Here is some more helpful information:

All the best. Large cysts in older sows are not at all uncommon.

Here is our recommended vet list, which relies on member feedback and is by nature patchy.

My last Guniea pig coco who was around 5/6 years old apparently had a massive cyst that was close to the kidneys and pushing on her insides from an xray, it was causing bloat as well cause it was so big and pushing on things. Her quality of life was poor. The vet said she would operate and try, but I decided to put to sleep, now that was my own case scenario and the cyst was apparently HUGE so please take my case with a pinch of salt. She stopped eating hay and nuggets and was really funny noises in her stomach, ate some greens but can’t live off that and her weight was dropping slowly and surely, we tried everything and the only option was to try and remove the cyst but the vet even said it’s very very risky with the size of it and if it was anywhere near her kidneys it’s a no go.

As Wiebke said she has had successful ones so I’m not being negative I’m just being honest and stating my case I had. I wish you all the best and I hope you get it sorted out :)

Coco is in my picture on here, I miss her dearly. Placid little soul :)
