Possible sick pig

The scale came in today! She's 1lb and 70 oz

Hi!

That is nearly 2 kilos, considering that the average weight of an adult guinea pig is about half of that?
Could you please try to weigh again in grams. We find grams much easier to handle because many UK members still think in imperial pounds and not metric US pounds, which in the weight range of guinea pigs can make a crucial difference. Grams are the same everywhere...

Oh hi!
I spoke to you a bit about one of our other piggies, Chai. Hope your holidays were well! So looks like she is 649G. 20200102_214512.webp20200102_214514.webp

Update:

She seems better than before but I still have concerns. She's back to eating now, she eats her veggies, hay and pellets. It seems on and off, like her appetite isn't as big as it was. She also behaves differently, she use to zoom a lot! now she mostly hides and sometimes she's even puffed up. When we take her out of the cage she licks/nips at the bed almost obsessively and if we put our hand in the way to stop her from nipping the bed she would just lick it constantly instead. She also is drinking large amounts of water. i'm planning to take her to the vet this week and ask them to run diagnostics on her, this is just frustrating because this will be the third time and I feel like I haven't gotten any answers let alone a full one diagnosis from these "exotic animal" vets! Should blood work be done or a urinalysis?

U r doing your best!❤❤ Take care I don't have anything to advise but here are other members who are experienced and would definitely take care of this thread

Are you continuing to weigh her regularly? What has been going on with her weight?
Being puffed up can indicate pain. Is she urinating ok?
Has there been any more bleeding - if so, she needs to have her reproductive tract checked.
Getting blood from a guinea is not as straight forward - this link explains ,Blood sampling - how and why

Yes I'm weighing her, I have to regulate it though in terms of finding the best time. When I come home from work is when i give them dinner so i don't know if that changes her weight. I'll start checking her weight in the morning rather and see. She seems to be? I caught her peeing yesterday and it was quite a lot probably because she’s drinking more than she normally does. I refreshed the bathroom recently, we keep newspapers on the bottom of the carefresh bedding we use and the news papers was sopping wet! No bleeding since that first time we caught it.

if this vet doesn't work out the next option is to go to an exotic animal center that ONLY takes care of EA here in the city. Thing is they charge an arm and a leg! $120 (92 GBP) per pig or for more than two pigs $75 (57 GBP) basically $300 (231 GBP)for the 4 pigs i have!

Also, thank you SO much for the link on bloodwork! I was actually thinking about what they can pick up in the blood so that was super helpful ! Tbh, i feel like going fully piggie mom mode and asking for a head to toe diagnostics! Reproductive, urine, blood, and back teeth. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. all these "it could be" or "it may be" is just NOT going to cut it!

I agree not knowing is the worst but it seems like your doing a great job, I would definitely get her reproductive tract checked, best of luck to you and your piggy 💞

What does getting the reproductive track check entail? For example, does the vet need a pee sample?

I'm not sure as I had mine spayed based on symptoms alone, but palpating the ovaries and womb and an ultrasound/ x Ray I'm not 100% on urine sample but guessing would need one to confirm a uti/blood in the pee

Diarrhea!? What should I do?

If your piggy is on any veg take them off until the poo is back to normal for at least 1-2 days. I’m sorry I haven’t read the thread but if it’s something ongoing then I’d take piggy to the vet.

:agr: Stop veggies and just feed hay so the gut can rebalance.
I think that you ought to see the exotic specialist given you can’t get to the bottom of the problems with your normal vet
Good luck

Went back to the vet we went to before on wednesday, I guess my anxiety made me underestimate him. He felt her abdomen and said she may have gas. We confirmed with a xray. With the other symptoms I mentioned he was afraid she may have pyometra and told me she would have to be spayed if so. But he felt that wasn't the issue and gave me metronidazole for her, told me if she didn't show signs of recovery in 1-2 days then he will investigate further with an ultrasound to check her for prometra. It's her third day on the meds, she's looking good! She's gaining her weight back and I haven't seen the soft poos anymore!
