Poorly Piggy, Been Told To Prepare For The Worst :(

Hi everyone. I took Poppy to the vets on Monday. When I took her the time before she weighed just over 1.3. She now weighs 1.02. She has lost quite a lot of weight. The blood is apparently coming out in her urine, not in her poop so apparently this is still cystitis and they think she is just bunged up and struggling to poo. They gave me a course of Loxicom, once a day for 2 weeks but she's had this before and it didn't help. I gave her her first syringe on Monday, and yesterday she stopped eating. She hasn't eaten anything since yesterday afternoon, hasn't been to the toilet or moved out of her tunnel. I have moved her myself to clean any damp/wet patches underneath her, but there isn't anything to clean. She also has urine scalds on her feet where she's previous laid in wet patches so I've been advised to put Sudocrem on the sores. I'm really worried as she isn't eating, drinking or moving. Her eyes are almost closed and her fur has gone extremely soft. This seemed to happen right before her sister, Dora, passed away a month ago so I'm extremely worried. I have phoned the vets today and she is booked in for this evening as they are worried about her. They said the medication should have had some sort of effect by now but instead she seems to be going downhill quickly. I've been told to prepare for the worst :(
 
Sorry to hear about your piggy. I'm not very experienced I'm afraid so can't offer any advice - hopefully someone will come along in a minute. Have you looked on the vet locator to see if you have a piggy specialist near you? Having had a bad experience with going to a general vet for piggy issues recently I highly recommend finding a more specialist vet if at all possible :)

Please start syringe feeding her immediately. If it's a urine infection it's definitely curable but she needs your help.

Are you weighing her daily? For the time being you can syringe feed mushed pellets but I'd recommend getting some critical care. The second a piggy becomes poorly you wanna look at getting as many syrige feeds in as you can to keep their guts going and their fluids up. Have a little look at the syringing guide that will help.

My Iggy had a bad case of cystisis and it was cleared up with Sulfatrim. Might be worth trying that? Is she on pain relief? Something like dog metacam should help her and hopefully she'll eat more.

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry. Are you syringe feeding her with fibre and water round the clock to keep the guts going? if you leave a guinea pig without support care if they stop eating for too long, the guts will close down and eventually stop working (GI stasis).
A guinea pig that is completely off its food needs about 40-60 ml in 24 hours of either mushed up pellets - in an emergency - or recovery formula to keep them alive, plus as much as water as they will take, especially with a urinary tract infection/cystitis. Your home care is vital to get your guinea pig through an acute crisis.
You have to feed the more often round the clock the less they will take on in one go. WEigh daily at the same time to monitor and adjust the food intake.

With a guinea pig that is not moving around much, you need to change the bedding at least once, if not twice daily to keep them from developing urine scald. Gently wash the bum, belly and feet with hand warm water before you treat with cream. Please be aware that sudocrem will dry out the skin; apply only very thinly.
For longer term mobility issues, we recommend to use soft vetbed bedding that you change daily.

Has your vet given you motility drugs to keep the guts going and have they checked whether she has got a bladder stone, sludge or kidney stones, or just a recurring cystitis that does not react to antibiotics and that needs to be treated with a high dosis of metacam (loxicom). What dosage is she on?

Have your vet to give her a scan to make sure she doesn't have stones or sludge in her bladder. We just had our piggy Bunny scanned this morning and found 2 stones in her bladder. So she'll get an operation to remove them tomorrow. She has blood in her urine, and we were treating her for UTI for the past 4 weeks. The good thing with my piggy is she is eating even if not as much in the past and we can manage to maintain her weight at 1200g. I suggest you asked your vet to give her a proper scan (it's like an ultrasound). The stones didn't show in her x-ray a couple of weeks ago (she wasn't given anaesthetic for that) but the scan finally did.
